Date for State Schools Champs

Someone more clever than myself just pointed out I had the date for the State Schools Champs wrong in the last post.

It is actually being held the 18th of April.

Still awaiting more info from the organisers - whenever I see it I shall post it here.

It's over!

Thanks to everyone who came to one or more of the events - we hope you enjoyed them and maybe will come along to an event in the Autumn Family Fun Series, the first of which is this Sunday at The Lea, near Kingston.

Also, the students out there may want to think about competing in the State Schools Orienteering Championships, near Launceston on April 24th. I believe it is the first selection race for the State Schools team for the Australian Championships in Adelaide in late September. I imagine there are spots up for grabs, especially in the younger classes and as an ex-team member, I can highly recommend it!

Full results are now available on the OT website here from yesterdays event and I'll also supply another link to the splits, just cause I'm such a nice guy.

Southern Schools Champs Results

Hello everyone,

Thanks for coming today, we had record numbers for the series and had to deal with some mismatched control codes and a student having a nasty run in with a barbed wire fence so we got a little behind schedule - thanks for everyone taking it in their stride.

I would like to sincerely thank Tony Mount for abandoning his course to inform us of the control code problem and for those affected for happily dealing with it.

Also apologies for the students on the short course who had trouble with control #4. It seems the nice big track that was meant to lead from control #3 to #4 has disappeared and doesn't lead all the way to the top of the hill any more! Those who missed that control only have been reinstated on the short course.

The top three placegetters in each class were:

Grade 12 and below:
1. Karl Bicevskis, Friends
2. Tom Palfrey, Rosny College
3. Marc Gluskie

Southern Schools Champs Details

There are the same courses on offer as previous weeks. However, for students to be official they must run their allocated class (or higher).

The championship classes are as follows:

Course

Length/Climb

Class

Long

3.8km/160m

Male & Female, Grades 12 and below.

Medium

2.8km/115m

Male & Female, Grades 9 and below. Groups.

Short

2.0km/55m

Male & Female, Grades 6 and below. Groups.

For example, a student in grade 8 may run the medium or long course, but would be unofficial if they ran the short course.

The ‘groups’ class include any students running in pairs or more, any age or gender combination.

For any student who would like to be official, but is nervous about running a higher course than they have been in the series; the organisers admit that some of the courses have been on the hard side of their designated difficulty level (the Long has been especially tough at times), the courses for this event have been set over a very small area and will be on the easier side of their designation. We encourage all students to ‘step up’ if they are unsure.

Waterworks One Leg Wonders

Here's the winners of this weeks one leg wonders.

Short
The leg this week for the short course was picked as it was quite long, physical and had a points where the track split (though it joined back up again) to cause confusion. The fastest were:

Oisin Stronach (2:54) and Elena Devlin (3:01)

Medium
This was a whopper of a climb, 40m up over 150m. The deserving winners were:

William Jose (1:38) and Stephanie Gordon (2:21)

Long
This one was a tricky route choice leg. Three options:
A: Cut straight up the hill through the green, then follow the track though.
B: South to the open corridor through the green, more climb but possibly faster.
C: The long way round. Little climb and good running, but a lot longer.

Route Choice

The ones who picked the best were (does anyone know which way they went?):
Bert Elson (3:09) and Bec Butler (2:41)

Well done to all the winners, make sure you come next week to collect your goodies.

This was the last week of the one leg wonder competition, as next week is the 'Southern Schools Champs'. It will still have the same course options, I will release more info later this week on who should run which course.

Week 5 results - Waterworks

Full results from this afternoons race can be found by clicking this and for the splits, try clicking that.
One leg wonder winners coming up in an hour or so, I have to watch Lost first...

The full results for this weeks event at Mount Nelson are here and the detailed splits are here.

Next week the event starts at the Waterworks reserve. The start will be at Hut 13, which is all the way at the end of the reserve.

Week 4 One Leg Wonders!

This week we challenged you all to take advantage of gravity. The winners are:

Short: David Taylor (2:24) and Elena Devlin (2:01)

Medium: Ben Jarvis (1:25) and Anna D. & Lucy D. (1:31)

Long: Stuart Lawrie (1:56) and Rebecca Butler (2:57)

There were some very close races in there, some were decided by seconds. So, congratulations to the winners, hope to see you next week to claim your winnings!

Full Results for Week 3

The full results are here and splits here.
I hope everyone who had a run today is in there, this was the first time using a new set up so there may have been some bugs. If you don't appear, or have the wrong time please let me know via southern.schools (-at-) tasorienteering.asn.au

The full results don't seem to come out well in Google Docs, just scroll down a little. They should also appear on the Orienteering Tasmania website in the next day or two.

Some of you found the courses a little tough this week, so I'm going to ease up a little for next weeks courses. Hope you can all make it.

Week Three One Leg Wonders

This week was all about being King of the Hill, as all courses tackled some sort of significant climb during their course, some of the long course runners may have felt they started down at the highway given the length of some splits!

The winners are:

Easy: Oisin Stronach (4:13) and Anna and Lucy (3:37)

Medium: William Jose (6:08) and Grace Rowe-Smith (7:04)

Long: Stuart Lawrie (5:33) and Emma Campbell (7:23)

As usual, the choccies can be claimed next week.

The courses were a little tougher this week as a long spread of time suggests. I'd like to congratulate Grace Fulton and Sally Moore for sticking in out on the long for 80 minutes!
For their persistence, they have earned a small prize which they can claim next week (if they can face another course).

Next week we reverse the trend and find out who uses gravity best. It'll be all downhill, see you then.
